When a tooth has been missing for years, the bone that held it slowly shrinks, because nothing is pressing on it any more. By the time you decide on an implant, there is sometimes not enough bone left to hold one.
Grafting rebuilds the area. Graft material is placed where bone is missing, and over several months your own bone grows through it and replaces it. In the upper back jaw, the sinus sits just above the missing molars. There, a sinus lift raises the sinus floor to give the implant the height it needs.
This is why we take an X-ray before we quote for an implant. If we tell you that you need a graft, it is not a sales tactic. It is the difference between an implant that holds and one that fails in two years.
Bone grafting: what is involved
- 1
Imaging
An X-ray or CT to measure exactly how much bone you have and how much is needed.
- 2
Grafting
Graft material is placed and the area is closed. This is done under local anaesthetic, so you will feel pressure, not pain.
- 3
Healing
Four to nine months for your own bone to replace the graft, depending on how large the area is.
- 4
Implant placement
Once the new bone is strong enough, the implant is placed as usual.
Bone grafting in Jodhpur — common questions
What is a dental bone graft? (Bone graft kya hota hai?)
A dental bone graft adds bone or bone-substitute material to the jaw where bone has been lost, usually so that a dental implant can be placed securely; the American Academy of Periodontology describes it as a routine way to rebuild bone lost to gum disease or tooth loss. Over several months, the body replaces the graft with its own new bone. It is commonly needed where a tooth has been missing for years or lost to gum disease.
Do I always need a bone graft for an implant?
No, many dental implants are placed without any bone graft. A graft is needed only when the X-ray or scan shows too little bone height or width to hold the implant firmly. Sometimes shorter or angled implants can avoid a graft, and the surgeon checks this first.
Does a bone graft hurt?
A dental bone graft is done under local anaesthetic, so it is not painful during the procedure. Afterwards there is swelling and soreness for a few days, managed with painkillers, similar to a tooth extraction. A sinus lift may cause a feeling of pressure in the cheek for a few days.
What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift adds bone under the floor of the maxillary sinus, above the upper back teeth, where the bone is often too thin for an implant. The sinus membrane is gently lifted and graft material placed beneath it. After a few months of healing, the implant can be placed securely.
Does the graft come from my own body?
Usually not: most dental bone grafting uses processed graft material, so no bone needs to be taken from another place in your body. For larger repairs, your own bone may be used, and Dr Suveet Mathur would discuss that with you fully first.
Can I avoid the graft?
Sometimes, shorter or angled implants, or placing the implant in a different position, can occasionally work around a shortage of bone. Pain-Off Dental Care checks these options before recommending a graft, because when it is possible it saves time and money.
How much extra time does a graft add?
A bone graft usually adds four to nine months before the implant can be placed, while the graft turns into solid bone. It is the main reason an implant plan can stretch over a year, which is better to know at the start than halfway through treatment.
Can a bone graft fail, and how do I help it heal?
A dental bone graft can occasionally fail, most often because of infection, smoking or pressure on the area while it heals. Not smoking or chewing tobacco, following the aftercare instructions, keeping the area clean and avoiding chewing on that side give the graft the best chance. Grafts in healthy non-smokers usually succeed.
Should a bone graft be done right after a tooth extraction?
A bone graft placed in the socket at the time of extraction, called socket preservation, helps keep the jawbone from shrinking while it heals. It is worth considering when an implant is planned for that space later. Ask about it before the tooth is removed.
How much does a bone graft cost in Jodhpur?
The cost of a bone graft in Jodhpur depends on the type and size: a small socket graft costs less than a sinus lift or a larger rebuild of the ridge, and the graft material used also affects the price. Pain-Off Dental Care gives a written cost after the X-ray or scan, before treatment.
