A crown is a cap that covers a tooth completely. It holds a root-treated or badly broken tooth together. It is the difference between that tooth lasting years and cracking in half on a piece of chikki.

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. It is fixed in place, so nothing comes out at night. It is the usual choice when an implant is not suitable or not affordable.

The material matters, and it is where most of the price difference comes from. We will explain zirconia, metal-free ceramic and metal-ceramic honestly, including when the cheaper option makes perfect sense.

Most of the crowns we fit follow a root canal. A root-treated tooth has been hollowed out inside and becomes brittle, so it needs covering rather than filling. That is why the two treatments are usually quoted together, and why a crown is not an optional extra afterwards.

Crowns & bridges: what is involved

  1. 1

    Preparation

The tooth is shaped so the crown fits over it without sitting too high when you bite.

  2. 2

    Impression or scan

An exact mould or scan of the tooth goes to the lab that makes the crown.

  3. 3

    Temporary crown

You leave with a temporary cap and can eat normally, with a little care.

  4. 4

    Fitting

The final crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented.

Crowns & bridges in Jodhpur — common questions

What is a dental crown or cap? (Dant ki cap kya hoti hai?)

A dental crown, often called a cap, is a tooth-shaped cover fitted over the whole visible part of a tooth to protect and strengthen it. Crowns are used after a root canal, on teeth with large fillings or cracks, and to restore badly worn or broken teeth. A bridge is crowns joined together to replace a missing tooth.

How much does a crown cost in Jodhpur? (Cap kitne ki aati hai?)

The cost of a dental crown in Jodhpur depends mainly on the material: metal-ceramic (PFM) costs least, while zirconia and all-ceramic crowns cost more but look more natural and contain no metal. A bridge costs roughly one crown per tooth in it. Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura explains each material and gives a written cost first.

How long does a crown last? (Cap kitne saal chalti hai?)

A well-made dental crown usually lasts 10 to 15 years and often much longer, as long as the gum around it stays healthy; systematic reviews in the dental literature report more than 90 percent of single crowns still in place after five years. Crowns do not decay, but the tooth underneath can, at the edge where crown and tooth meet. Brushing along the gumline and regular check-ups are what make crowns last.

Zirconia or metal-ceramic crown: what is the difference?

A metal-ceramic (PFM) crown is porcelain over a metal base: strong and lower in cost, but it can show a dark line at the gum over time. A zirconia crown is metal-free, lets light through like a natural tooth and is very strong. Zirconia is usually worth it for front teeth; for back molars, either works well.

Is a crown necessary after root canal treatment?

For back teeth, a crown after root canal treatment is strongly advised, because a root-treated molar or premolar becomes brittle and can crack under chewing force. A cracked root-treated tooth usually cannot be saved. Front teeth, which take less biting force, sometimes manage with a filling alone.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Getting a crown is not painful. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic while it is shaped, and a tooth that has had a root canal often needs no anaesthetic at all. The gum may feel slightly sore for a day or two, and some sensitivity to cold can occur briefly after fitting.

How many visits does a crown take?

A dental crown usually takes two visits about a week apart. At the first, the tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken and a temporary crown is fitted. At the second, the permanent crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented. A bridge follows the same steps.

Bridge or implant for a missing tooth?

A dental implant replaces a missing tooth without touching the teeth next to it, which is its main advantage. A bridge needs the two neighbouring teeth filed down to hold it. If those teeth already need crowns, a bridge makes good sense; if they are healthy, an implant is usually the better long-term choice.

Crown or veneer for a front tooth?

A veneer covers only the front surface of a tooth and suits healthy front teeth that need a change in colour or shape. A crown covers the whole tooth and suits front teeth that are weakened by large fillings, cracks or a root canal. Crowns remove more tooth structure, so veneers are preferred when the tooth is strong.

Why does my tooth hurt under the crown?

Pain under a dental crown can mean the bite is slightly high, new decay at the crown's edge, gum inflammation, or, in a tooth without a root canal, an inflamed nerve. Mild sensitivity in the first week or two after fitting is normal. Pain that persists, throbs or wakes you at night needs a check and an X-ray.
