We would rather save a tooth than remove one, and we will tell you when saving it is realistic. But some teeth are beyond repair: split down the root, decayed below the gum, or loose from advanced gum disease. Keeping those is not caution. It only delays the same result, with more pain along the way.

An extraction under proper local anaesthetic should not hurt. You will feel firm pressure. That is the tooth moving, and it is meant to happen.

What matters most comes after. Leaving a gap has consequences: the teeth next to it tilt into the space, and the tooth opposite drifts out of its socket. We will always talk about replacing the tooth before we take it out, not months later once the drifting has begun.

Tooth extraction: what is involved

  1. 1

    Assessment

An X-ray to check the root shape and whether the removal will be simple or surgical.

  2. 2

    Numbing

Local anaesthetic. We check that the area is numb before we start.

  3. 3

    Removal

The tooth is loosened and lifted out. Difficult roots may be removed in sections.

  4. 4

    Aftercare

Gauze, written instructions, and a discussion about replacing the tooth.

After a tooth extraction: the first 24 hours and the week after

The blood clot that forms in the socket is what heals it. Almost every aftercare rule exists to protect that clot for the first few days.

  • Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. If oozing continues, bite on a fresh folded gauze or a damp tea bag for another 30 minutes.
  • First 24 hours: no rinsing, spitting, smoking, gutkha, straws or very hot drinks. Rest, and keep your head raised.
  • Eat soft, lukewarm food on the other side: dahi, khichdi, dal, soft rice, mashed potato. Tea and coffee once lukewarm.
  • From the next day: gentle warm salt-water rinses after meals, and brush the other teeth normally, carefully near the socket.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, and while taking any prescribed medicine.
  • Call the clinic if bleeding will not stop after an hour of pressure, pain gets worse on day 3 or 4, or you develop fever or spreading swelling.

Tooth extraction in Jodhpur — common questions

Should I get my tooth removed? (Dant nikalna chahiye ya nahi?)

A tooth should be removed only when it cannot be saved, for example when it is broken below the gum, too loose from gum disease, or badly infected and a root canal is not possible. Saving your own tooth is usually better and cheaper in the long run. The X-ray at Pain-Off Dental Care shows which option your tooth still allows.

Does tooth extraction hurt?

Tooth extraction is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure, not pain. Afterwards, soreness for two to three days is normal and is managed with ordinary painkillers taken as directed. Pain that gets worse after the third day is not normal and may be a dry socket, which the dentist can treat.

What can I eat after tooth extraction? (Dant nikalne ke baad kya khaayein?)

After a tooth extraction, eat soft, lukewarm food on the other side for the first few days: dahi, khichdi, dal, soft rice, mashed potato and soaked roti. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy and sticky food, straws and fizzy drinks for at least 24 hours. Tea is fine once it is lukewarm.

How long does bleeding last after extraction?

Bleeding after a tooth extraction usually slows within an hour, and light oozing or pink saliva can continue for the rest of the day. Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. If bleeding is still heavy after an hour of firm pressure, contact the dentist, or go to a hospital if it will not stop.

When can I brush after tooth extraction?

You can brush your other teeth the night of a tooth extraction, carefully avoiding the socket. Do not rinse or spit forcefully for the first 24 hours. From the next day, brush gently near the area and rinse softly with warm salt water after meals to keep it clean while it heals.

What is a dry socket and how do I avoid it?

A dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost and the bone is exposed. It causes throbbing pain that starts two to four days after the extraction. To avoid it, do not smoke, chew gutkha, use straws or rinse hard for the first few days. Smoking is the biggest risk.

Can I have a tooth extracted if I have diabetes or high blood pressure?

Yes, people with diabetes or high blood pressure can usually have a tooth extracted safely, as long as the condition is controlled. Take your usual medicines and eat normally beforehand, and tell the dentist your readings. People on blood thinners should never stop them on their own; the dentist coordinates with your doctor.

Can a tooth be extracted during pregnancy?

Yes, a tooth can be extracted safely during pregnancy when needed, and the second trimester is the most comfortable time. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that dental treatment with local anaesthetic is safe in pregnancy, and treating a painful or infected tooth is safer than leaving it. Tell the dentist you are pregnant so any X-ray and medicines are chosen accordingly.

How long does it take to heal after a tooth extraction?

The gum over a tooth extraction site usually closes in one to two weeks, and the bone underneath fills in over three to six months. Most discomfort is gone within a few days. A larger or surgical extraction, such as an impacted wisdom tooth, takes a little longer.

How soon can the gap be filled?

The gap after an extraction is usually filled after two to three months of healing, with an implant or a bridge. In some cases an implant can be placed at the same appointment as the extraction. Ask about this before the tooth comes out, because it changes how the tooth is removed.
