Braces move teeth into place over several months by applying steady, gentle pressure. They are still the most reliable way to fix crowding, gaps, front teeth that stick out, and bites that do not meet properly. They also handle difficult cases that clear aligners cannot.

More and more of our braces patients are adults, and ceramic braces are usually why. They are tooth-coloured and far less visible than metal. There is no upper age limit for moving teeth, as long as the gums and bone are healthy.

Straight teeth are not only about looks. Crowded teeth trap food where a brush cannot reach. That is why crowding so often comes with repeated decay and swollen gums in the same spots. While the braces are on, a professional cleaning every few months keeps the gums around the brackets healthy.

Crowding sometimes means a tooth has to come out before braces can work. That sounds worse than it is. A single planned tooth extraction to make room is a routine part of orthodontics. The alternative is pushing crowded teeth into a jaw with no space, and they simply move back.

Braces: what is involved

  1. 1

    Assessment

X-rays, photographs and impressions, and an honest talk about what can realistically be achieved.

  2. 2

    Fitting

Small brackets are bonded to the teeth and joined with a wire. It takes around an hour, and it does not hurt.

  3. 3

    Adjustments

Every four to six weeks the wire is changed to keep the teeth moving. Expect your teeth to feel sore for a few days after each visit.

  4. 4

    Retainers

Without a retainer, teeth drift back. Retainers are not optional — they are what keeps the result permanent.

Metal, ceramic or self-ligating braces: the differences

All three types of braces move teeth the same way: brackets on the teeth, joined by a wire that is adjusted every four to six weeks. They differ in how visible they are, how they hold the wire, and the cost.

  • Metal braces: the strongest and lowest cost, and the usual choice for teenagers and difficult tooth movements. Clearly visible.
  • Ceramic braces: tooth-coloured brackets that are much less noticeable, popular with adults and college students. Cost more, and the brackets are slightly more fragile.
  • Self-ligating braces: brackets with a built-in clip instead of elastic ties, so there is less friction and adjustments are quicker. Available in metal or ceramic.

Eating and cleaning with braces

Most everyday Indian food is fine with braces: dal, rice, roti, soft sabzi, paneer, curd, idli and dosa. The foods that break brackets are hard, sticky or bitten straight into with the front teeth.

Food collects around brackets, and plaque left there leaves white marks on the teeth when the braces come off. Brush after every meal with a soft brush, angled above and below the wire, and use an interdental brush between the brackets. A professional cleaning every few months keeps the gums healthy during treatment.

  • Avoid: chikki, whole nuts, corn on the cob (bhutta), hard toffee, chewing gum, ice, and biting into whole apples or guavas.
  • Cut fruit and roti into small pieces and chew with the back teeth.
  • If a bracket comes loose or a wire pokes your cheek, call us; a little orthodontic wax over it gives relief until the visit.

Braces in Jodhpur — common questions

How much do braces cost in Jodhpur? (Braces kitne ke aate hain?)

Braces at Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur start from Rs 25,000 for a year of treatment, with a payment plan of Rs 3,000 a month. The final cost depends on the type of braces, metal, ceramic or self-ligating, and on how long your case takes. You get a written estimate after X-rays.

How long do braces take? (Braces kitne time tak lagte hain?)

Braces usually take 12 to 24 months. Mild crowding or a small gap can finish in under a year, while correcting a bite or severe crowding takes longer. Adjustments are every 4 to 6 weeks. After the braces come off, you wear a retainer to stop the teeth moving back.

Do braces hurt? (Braces lagwane me dard hota hai?)

Getting braces fitted does not hurt. The teeth feel sore for 2 to 3 days after fitting and after each adjustment, because they are starting to move. Soft food and ordinary painkillers are enough. The brackets can rub the cheeks for the first week, which orthodontic wax relieves.

What is the right age for braces? (Braces kis age me lagana chahiye?)

Braces most often start between 11 and 14, once most adult teeth are in. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by age 7, so problems with jaw growth can be caught early. There is no upper age limit: adults with healthy gums and bone can have braces at any age.

Should I choose metal or ceramic braces?

Metal braces are the strongest and lowest-cost option and suit teenagers and difficult tooth movements. Ceramic braces are tooth-coloured and much less visible, so adults and college students often choose them, but they cost more and the brackets are more fragile. Both straighten teeth equally well in most cases.

Braces or clear aligners: which is better?

Braces are better for severe crowding, badly turned teeth and major bite problems, and they cannot be left out. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, and suit mild to moderate cases in people who will wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. Pain-Off Dental Care's orthodontist will tell you which suits your teeth.

What should I eat with braces? (Braces me kya khana chahiye?)

With braces you can eat most everyday food: dal, rice, roti, soft sabzi, paneer, curd, idli and dosa. Avoid hard and sticky foods that break brackets, such as chikki, whole nuts, bhutta, hard toffee, chewing gum and ice. Cut fruit and roti into small pieces and chew with the back teeth.

Do I need a retainer after braces? (Braces ke baad retainer kab tak?)

Yes, teeth tend to drift back after braces come off, so a retainer is part of every braces treatment, not an extra. Most people wear it full-time for the first months and then at night. The British Orthodontic Society advises wearing retainers long term if you want the result to last.

Can braces fix gaps and protruding front teeth?

Yes, braces close gaps between teeth and pull protruding front teeth back into line, which are two of the most common reasons people in Jodhpur ask for them. Protruding teeth sometimes need a premolar removed to make space. The orthodontist confirms this from X-rays at the first visit.

Am I too old for braces?

No one is too old for braces. Teeth move at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy, which is checked first. Many adults straighten their teeth at Pain-Off Dental Care, often with tooth-coloured ceramic braces. Any gum treatment needed is done before the braces go on.
