Not every surgical problem in the mouth is a tooth. Cysts form in the jawbone and grow silently until an X-ray finds them. Lumps appear in the cheek or on the tongue and need to be identified. An infection at the tip of a root can survive a root canal and need to be removed surgically.
These are day procedures, done under local anaesthetic here at the clinic by a surgeon who does them regularly.
Any lump, ulcer, or white or red patch in the mouth that has not healed in three weeks should be checked. That is not a reason to panic. Most of them turn out to be harmless. But it is a reason not to wait.

Oral surgery in Jodhpur — common questions
What does an oral and maxillofacial surgeon do?
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon treats conditions of the mouth, jaws and face that need surgery: impacted wisdom teeth, jaw cysts, biopsies of suspicious patches, jaw fractures, corrective jaw surgery, implants and bone grafting. At Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur, this is Dr Suveet Mathur, who holds an MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
I have a lump in my mouth. Should I be worried?
Most lumps in the mouth are harmless, such as a blocked salivary gland, a lump from biting the cheek, or a fibroma. But any lump, ulcer or patch that has not healed within two to three weeks should be examined by a dentist or oral surgeon, not just watched. Problems found early are far easier to treat.
What are the early signs of mouth cancer?
Early signs of mouth cancer include an ulcer that does not heal within two to three weeks, a white or red patch, a lump or thickening in the cheek or tongue, unexplained bleeding, numbness, or difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing. Early mouth cancer is often painless, which is why regular checks matter for tobacco and gutkha users.
Is a white patch in the mouth cancer? (Leukoplakia kya hai?)
A white patch in the mouth that cannot be wiped off is called leukoplakia. Most are not cancer, but some are potentially malignant, especially in people who smoke or chew tobacco, gutkha or areca nut. A biopsy is the only way to know. Stopping tobacco is the most important step, and the patch should be examined promptly.
Why can't I open my mouth fully? (Munh kam khulna)
Difficulty opening the mouth fully can be caused by jaw joint problems, an infected wisdom tooth, or oral submucous fibrosis, a condition strongly linked to chewing areca nut, gutkha and paan, in which the inner cheeks become stiff and pale. Oral submucous fibrosis is potentially malignant and should be assessed by an oral surgeon.
Do you screen for oral cancer?
Yes, every examination at Pain-Off Dental Care includes a check of the tongue, cheeks, gums and floor of the mouth. India has one of the highest rates of oral cancer in the world, largely linked to chewing tobacco, gutkha, paan and areca nut. If you chew, ask the dentist to look carefully and show you what to watch for.
What is a mouth biopsy, and does it hurt?
A mouth biopsy removes a small piece of tissue from a suspicious patch or lump so a laboratory can examine it. It is done under local anaesthetic, takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and may need a few dissolving stitches. The area is sore for a few days. Results usually take about a week.
What is a jaw cyst?
A jaw cyst is a fluid-filled sac in the jawbone, often linked to an infected tooth root or an unerupted tooth such as a wisdom tooth. Many cause no symptoms and are found on an X-ray. Left untreated, a cyst can slowly grow and weaken the jaw, so it is usually removed surgically and sent for testing.
What is an apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a small surgical procedure that removes the tip of a tooth root when infection remains there even after a root canal. The root tip is reached through the gum, removed and sealed. It saves a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted, and is done under local anaesthetic.
What is a frenectomy (tongue-tie release)?
A frenectomy releases a tight band of tissue under the tongue (tongue-tie) or under the upper lip that restricts movement. In babies it can help feeding, and in children and adults it can help speech, cleaning or a gap between the front teeth. It is a quick procedure under local anaesthetic.
