A cavity is decay that has eaten through the enamel into the softer tooth underneath. Left alone, it keeps going. Once it reaches the nerve, a simple filling is no longer enough — that is when a root canal becomes the only way to save the tooth.

A filling stops the decay there. We remove the decayed part, clean the cavity and rebuild the tooth with a composite material matched to your tooth colour. It takes one visit, and you can eat normally the same day.

If you have been putting it off because the tooth does not hurt yet, now is exactly the right time. Pain means the decay has already reached the nerve.

Sometimes a filling is no longer the right answer. If decay has taken so much of the tooth that little is left to hold a filling, the filling will keep breaking. A crown, which covers the whole tooth, lasts where a large filling will not. We will tell you which side of that line your tooth is on.

Fillings: what is involved

  1. 1

    Numbing

Local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain. Small cavities sometimes need none.

  2. 2

    Removing decay

The decayed part is cleared out until only healthy tooth remains.

  3. 3

    Filling

Composite is placed in layers and hardened with a special light.

  4. 4

    Shaping and polishing

The filling is shaped to your bite and polished, so it does not catch or feel high when you bite.

Dant me keeda: what a cavity really is

There is no worm in a tooth. What people call dant me keeda is tooth decay: bacteria in plaque turn sugar into acid, and the acid dissolves the tooth, leaving a dark hole that looks as if something has eaten into it. The World Health Organization reports that tooth decay in permanent teeth is the most common health condition in the world.

Decay starts painless, as a chalky white or brown spot. At that stage it can sometimes be stopped with fluoride and better cleaning. Once it becomes a hole, it does not heal, and it grows steadily inwards. A small filling then becomes a large filling, and a large one becomes a root canal once it reaches the nerve. That is why cavities found early at a check-up are the cheapest to fix.

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, last thing at night most of all.
  • Cut down how often you have sugar, especially sticky sweets, biscuits and sweet chai between meals.
  • Do not put children to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Have a check-up every six months; X-rays find cavities between teeth that you cannot see.

Fillings in Jodhpur — common questions

What should I do if I have a cavity? (Cavity ho jaye to kya karein?)

If you have a cavity, see a dentist soon, even if it does not hurt. A small cavity is fixed with a quick filling in one visit; left alone, it grows towards the nerve and may need a root canal. Until then, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and avoid sweet, sticky food.

Can a cavity heal on its own?

A cavity that has become a hole cannot heal on its own, because enamel does not grow back. Very early decay, seen as a white chalky spot without a hole, can sometimes be stopped with fluoride and better cleaning. Once a dentist confirms an actual cavity, a filling is the way to stop it growing.

Is there really a worm in my tooth? (Dant me keeda kya hai?)

No, there is no worm in a tooth. What is called dant me keeda is tooth decay, caused by bacteria in plaque that turn sugar into acid and dissolve the tooth. The dark hole looks eaten, which is where the idea comes from. Home remedies cannot remove it; a dentist cleans out the decay and fills the hole.

Silver or tooth-coloured filling: which is better?

Tooth-coloured composite fillings are the standard choice at Pain-Off Dental Care because they bond to the tooth, need less healthy tooth removed and cannot be seen. Silver amalgam fillings are cheaper and last well in back teeth, but most patients now prefer tooth-coloured. The dentist explains which suits your tooth.

How much does a dental filling cost in Jodhpur?

The cost of a dental filling in Jodhpur depends on the material, tooth-coloured composite or silver amalgam, and on how large and deep the cavity is. A small filling on one surface costs less than a large one across several. Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura tells you the cost after examining the tooth, before starting.

How long does a filling last?

A well-placed tooth-coloured filling usually lasts several years and often much longer. It depends on the size of the cavity, where in the mouth it is, how well the area is cleaned, and whether you grind your teeth. Regular check-ups catch a worn or leaking filling before decay starts underneath it.

Does getting a filling hurt?

Getting a filling should not hurt. Small, shallow fillings sometimes need no injection at all, and deeper ones are done after the tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel vibration and pressure rather than pain. The numbness wears off in two to three hours.

My tooth hurts after a filling. Is that normal? (Filling ke baad dard)

Mild sensitivity to cold or biting for one to two weeks after a filling is normal, especially after a deep one. If the bite feels high, the filling may need a small adjustment. Pain that keeps getting worse, throbbing that lasts after the cold is gone, or pain that wakes you at night means the nerve should be checked.

When can I eat after a filling?

With a tooth-coloured composite filling you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, because the material is set hard with a light before you leave. Wait until the numbness goes, about two to three hours, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Silver fillings need about a day before hard chewing.

Can children's milk teeth with cavities be filled?

Yes, cavities in children's milk teeth should be treated, because milk teeth hold the space for adult teeth and decay in them can cause pain, infection and damage to the teeth developing underneath. Children's fillings are quick, and the dentists at Pain-Off Dental Care work at the child's pace, one step at a time.
