A tooth gem is a small crystal fixed to the front surface of a tooth with the same bonding material used for a filling. There is no drilling and nothing is removed from the tooth. It comes off cleanly whenever you decide, and the tooth underneath is untouched.
Why have it done at a dental clinic and not a salon? Because of the bond. Done properly, the edges are sealed and smooth, so plaque cannot collect under it. Done badly, a gem traps bacteria against the enamel and leaves a patch of decay when it eventually falls off.

Is getting a tooth gem painful?
Getting a tooth gem is not painful. No injection or drilling is needed: the tooth surface is cleaned, a bonding adhesive is applied, the gem is placed and the adhesive is set with a light. The whole visit takes about 15 minutes.
How long does a tooth gem stay on?
A tooth gem typically stays on for six months to a couple of years. It can come off earlier if knocked or bitten on, and can be re-bonded. Biting hard food directly with the gem tooth shortens its life.

Yes, a tooth gem can be removed at any time. The dentist takes it off and polishes the tooth surface, and the tooth looks as it did before.
Are DIY tooth gem kits safe?
DIY tooth gem kits are not recommended. Some use nail glue or other adhesives not meant for the mouth, which can irritate the gums or damage enamel, and a badly bonded gem can be swallowed or inhaled. A dentist also checks the tooth is healthy and free of decay first.
