PRP uses your own blood. A small sample is spun in a machine called a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. Platelets carry the growth factors involved in healing, and this concentrate is then injected into the area being treated.

At our clinic it has two uses. In surgery, PRP placed into an extraction or graft site supports healing — this is how a maxillofacial surgeon first comes across it. Separately, it is used on the face and scalp, for skin quality and for thinning hair.

It is best to be honest about what to expect. PRP is a course of treatments, not a one-time fix. Results vary from person to person, and it works better for thinning hair than for areas that are already bald. At the consultation, we will tell you if we do not think it will work well for you.

In the clinic we use PRP most often alongside surgery, not on its own — with bone grafting, or after a difficult extraction. Concentrating your own platelets at the site is a simple way to help the area close and heal.

PRP treatment in Jodhpur — common questions

Does PRP work for hair loss?

PRP works best for early-stage thinning hair, such as pattern hair loss where the hair roots are still active, and can reduce hair fall and improve thickness over a course of sessions. Results vary between people. PRP does not regrow hair in fully bald areas. Pain-Off Dental Care will tell you at the consultation if it is unlikely to help.

How many PRP sessions will I need?

A PRP course is usually three to four sessions, about a month apart, followed by a top-up session every few months to maintain the result. One session on its own is not a full course. Improvement in hair or skin shows gradually, usually over two to three months.

Is PRP safe? What are the side effects?

PRP is made from your own blood, so there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction to a foreign substance. The usual side effects are soreness, redness and mild swelling at the injection sites for a day or two. It is not suitable during pregnancy, or for people with certain blood disorders or active scalp infection.

Does PRP hair treatment hurt?

PRP hair treatment causes some discomfort from the injections, which most people describe as tolerable. A numbing cream applied beforehand makes it much more comfortable. The scalp may feel tender for a day afterwards. The blood draw itself is the same as a routine blood test.

Will PRP regrow hair I have already lost?

PRP does not regrow hair in areas that are completely bald, because the hair roots there are no longer active. It works best on thinning hair, where it can strengthen existing roots. For a bald patch or a receding hairline that has fully gone, a dermatologist or hair transplant surgeon is the right person to see.

What is the difference between PRP and GFC?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and GFC (growth factor concentrate) are both made from your own blood. PRP concentrates the platelets; GFC goes a step further and extracts the growth factors from them. GFC is newer, and there is less published research on it than on PRP, which has been studied for many years.

How long do PRP results last?

PRP results for hair and skin usually last several months to a year, and maintenance sessions every four to six months help keep them. PRP does not stop the underlying cause of pattern hair loss, so thinning continues slowly without maintenance. Results vary from person to person.

What care is needed after PRP?

After PRP, avoid washing the treated area for the rest of the day, and avoid hair colour, harsh hair products, saunas and heavy exercise for 48 hours. Mild redness and tenderness are normal. Pain-Off Dental Care gives written aftercare instructions at the end of each session.

What does PRP do for the face?

PRP for the face is used to improve skin texture, fine lines, acne scars and dull skin, and around the eyes. It works gradually as the skin renews, so changes show over two to three months rather than immediately. It is a course of treatments, not a one-time procedure.

Why is PRP done at a dental clinic?

At Pain-Off Dental Care, PRP is carried out by Dr Suveet Mathur, an MDS oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who uses it routinely in surgery to help extraction and bone-graft sites heal. Preparing and injecting PRP safely is part of maxillofacial training, and the face is a maxillofacial surgeon's area of work.
