Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers the mouth, jaws and face. It is the part of dentistry that crosses into full surgery. It needs a separate three-year specialist degree after the dental qualification, and most dental clinics do not have anyone who holds it.
The work covers a wide range. It includes correcting a jaw that is too far forward or back and cannot be fixed by braces alone, and repairing jaw and cheekbone fractures after an accident. It also includes removing cysts and growths from the jaw, and treating jaw joint (TMJ) problems that cause clicking, locking and facial pain.
If you have been told your case needs a maxillofacial surgeon, or you are comparing a private option with AIIMS Jodhpur, this consultation is worth having. We will tell you plainly what is involved — including when surgery is not the answer.
Not every jaw problem needs surgery, and part of the consultation is finding that out. Pain at the joint is more often caused by the bite or by clenching than by the bone itself. And an impacted lower tooth pressing on a nerve is a wisdom tooth case, not a jaw case. We would rather tell you that than operate.
Jaw surgery: what is involved
- 1
Consultation and imaging
Clinical examination with X-rays or a CT scan to understand the bone anatomy.
- 2
Planning
Corrective jaw surgery is planned together with orthodontics. Braces usually come before and after the surgery itself.
- 3
Surgery
Major cases are done in a hospital under general anaesthetic. Smaller procedures are done in the clinic under local anaesthetic.
- 4
Recovery and review
A planned series of follow-up visits. Corrective jaw surgery takes months from start to finish, and we set out the whole timeline before you commit.
Jaw surgery in Jodhpur — common questions
What is corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery)?
Corrective jaw surgery, called orthognathic surgery, repositions the upper jaw, lower jaw or both so the teeth meet properly and the face is balanced. It is done when the jaw bones themselves, not just the teeth, are out of position. It is usually combined with braces before and after, and is carried out by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
Do I need jaw surgery or will braces be enough?
Braces alone can correct most bites where only the teeth are out of position. Jaw surgery is needed when the jaw bones are mismatched, such as a severe underbite or overbite, or an open bite in an adult whose jaw has stopped growing. X-rays and an assessment by an orthodontist and a maxillofacial surgeon together decide which applies.
How long is the recovery after jaw surgery?
Recovery after jaw surgery takes about six weeks for the bone to heal. Swelling is greatest in the first week, most people return to work or college in two to three weeks, and a soft or liquid diet is needed for the first few weeks. Braces usually continue for several months afterwards to fine-tune the bite.
Is jaw surgery painful?
Jaw surgery is done under general anaesthetic, so there is no pain during the operation. Afterwards, swelling and discomfort are managed with prescribed medicines and usually ease steadily over one to two weeks. Numbness of the lip or chin is common at first and in most cases improves over the following months.
Does jaw surgery change your face or voice?
Jaw surgery changes the profile of the face, usually making it more balanced, because the jaw bones are moved into a better position. The voice usually does not change noticeably. A plan made before surgery shows how the face is expected to look afterwards.
Is corrective jaw surgery cosmetic?
Corrective jaw surgery is usually done for function, not looks: a bite that does not work, difficulty chewing, jaw pain, or breathing and sleep problems. The face changes as a result. Purely cosmetic requests are assessed carefully, and Dr Suveet Mathur will say so if surgery is not needed.
What is the difference between an oral surgeon and a general dentist?
A general dentist holds a BDS degree. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon has completed a further MDS specialising in surgery of the mouth, jaws and face, and is trained to operate on facial bone. At Pain-Off Dental Care, Dr Suveet Mathur holds the MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Can a broken jaw heal on its own?
A broken jaw should never be left to heal on its own. Even a jaw fracture that does not seem displaced needs an X-ray, because a fracture that heals in the wrong position changes the bite permanently. After an accident with a facial injury, go to a hospital emergency department first, especially if there is a head injury.
Do you handle emergency facial injuries?
Serious facial injuries should be seen at a hospital emergency department first, particularly with any head injury, heavy bleeding or difficulty breathing. Contact Pain-Off Dental Care for advice; if the injury needs a hospital, you will be told to go there rather than come to the clinic.
Is jaw surgery covered by RGHS or CGHS?
Pain-Off Dental Care is not empanelled under RGHS (the Rajasthan Government Health Scheme) or CGHS, so treatment here is not billed to those schemes. Patients covered by RGHS or CGHS who want to use the scheme should go to an empanelled hospital. For private treatment here, you receive an itemised bill and a written cost before surgery.
