When decay reaches the nerve inside a tooth, the nerve gets infected. That is the pain that keeps you up at night and throbs when you lie down, and painkillers only help for a short while. At this stage there are two choices: remove the tooth, or remove the nerve and keep the tooth. A root canal is the second.
The infected tissue is cleaned out of the canals inside the root, and the space is disinfected and sealed. The tooth is then capped with a crown so it does not crack. It stays in your mouth and works normally.
Root canals have an unfair name for being painful. The pain people remember is from the infection that brought them in, not the treatment. The treatment is what stops it. With proper anaesthetic, an RCT feels much like having a filling done.
The alternative to a root canal is losing the tooth. That is the real choice, so it helps to be clear about it. A tooth extraction is quicker and cheaper on the day — and then you have to decide how to fill the gap for the next thirty years. An X-ray at the first visit usually shows which option the tooth still allows.
Root canal (RCT): what is involved
- 1
X-ray and diagnosis
We confirm the nerve is affected and check the shape and number of the root canals.
- 2
Numbing and access
The tooth is numbed and a small opening is made in the top of it.
- 3
Cleaning the canals
The infected tissue is removed, and the canals are shaped and disinfected.
- 4
Sealing
The canals are filled with a safe, sealed material so bacteria cannot come back.
- 5
Crown
A root-treated tooth is brittle and needs a crown. Skipping the crown is the usual reason a root-treated tooth fails later.
How long does a root canal last?
A root canal with a crown usually lasts many years, and often for life. A systematic review in the International Endodontic Journal (Ng and colleagues, 2010) found that 86 to 93 percent of root-treated teeth were still in the mouth two to ten years later. The treatment itself does not wear out. What decides how long the tooth lasts is what happens next.
Three things matter most. First, the crown: a back tooth left without one is much more likely to crack. Second, new decay around the edge of the crown, which brushing and a yearly check-up catch early. Third, a hidden extra canal that was missed, which is why the X-ray at the start matters so much.
Is root canal treatment safe? The heart and cancer worries
Root canal treatment is safe. The idea that root-treated teeth cause heart disease, cancer or other illness comes from a theory of the 1920s that later research did not support. The American Association of Endodontists states there is no valid scientific evidence linking root canal treatment to disease elsewhere in the body.
The real health risk runs the other way. An infected tooth left untreated can spread into the jaw and the face, and in rare cases needs hospital care. Removing that infection is what a root canal does.
If you have a heart condition, take blood thinners or are diabetic, tell us before treatment. Most patients carry on their usual medicines. Do not stop any medicine on your own; we will check with your doctor if anything needs to change.
After your root canal in Jodhpur: eating and aftercare
Wait until the numbness wears off before you eat, usually two to three hours, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. For the first few days, chew on the other side.
Until the crown is fitted, the tooth only has a temporary filling and can crack under hard food. Soft everyday food is fine: dal, khichdi, roti dipped in curry, curd, idli, upma. Avoid chikki, nuts, hard rotis on that side, ice and very sticky sweets until the crown is on.
- Mild soreness for 2 to 3 days is normal and settles with ordinary painkillers.
- Brush and floss normally, gently around the treated tooth.
- Get the crown fitted within a few weeks, not months.
- Call us at once if swelling grows, you get a fever, or pain is getting worse rather than better after 3 days.
Root canal (RCT) in Jodhpur — common questions
Is root canal treatment painful? (Kya RCT me dard hota hai?)
Root canal treatment at Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure, not pain. The severe pain people remember comes from the infected nerve before treatment, and the root canal is what stops it. Expect mild soreness for 2 to 3 days afterwards, which ordinary painkillers manage.
How much does root canal treatment cost in Jodhpur?
Root canal treatment at Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura, Jodhpur starts from Rs 4,000 per tooth. The final cost depends mainly on the tooth: a front tooth has one canal, while a molar has three or four and takes longer. The crown that protects the tooth afterwards is included in the price. You get a written estimate after the X-ray, before treatment starts.
Do I need a cap or crown after root canal? (RCT ke baad cap zaroori hai?)
For back teeth, yes: a root-treated molar or premolar becomes brittle because it no longer has a blood supply, and chewing can crack it. A cracked root-treated tooth usually cannot be saved. Front teeth, which take less biting force, sometimes manage with a filling alone. Your dentist will tell you which applies after treatment.
Can a root canal be done in one visit?
Yes, a root canal can often be finished in one visit of 60 to 90 minutes, especially on a front tooth with a single canal. A molar with three or four curved canals, or a tooth with an active abscess that needs to settle first, usually takes two or three visits. The crown is fitted at a separate appointment.
How long does pain last after a root canal?
After a root canal, mild soreness when biting usually lasts 2 to 3 days and fades steadily. That is the tissue around the root settling down, not the nerve, which has been removed. Pain that gets worse after 3 days, new swelling or a fever are not normal, and you should call your dentist the same day.
How many years does a root canal last? (RCT kitne saal chalta hai?)
A root canal with a well-fitted crown commonly lasts 10 years or more, and often for life. A 2010 systematic review in the International Endodontic Journal found 86 to 93 percent of root-treated teeth survived two to ten years. The main reasons a treated tooth is lost later are a missing crown and new decay.
Root canal or extraction: which is better?
Keeping your own tooth with a root canal is usually better than extraction when the tooth can be saved. An extraction is cheaper on the day, but the gap lets neighbouring teeth tilt, and replacing the tooth later with an implant or bridge costs several times more. Pain-Off Dental Care will tell you honestly if a tooth is not worth saving.
Can root canal treatment be done during pregnancy?
Yes, root canal treatment can be done safely during pregnancy, and leaving a tooth infection untreated carries more risk than treating it. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that dental treatment, including local anaesthetic and shielded X-rays, is safe in pregnancy. The second trimester is the most comfortable time for longer appointments.
What can I eat after a root canal?
After a root canal, wait until the numbness has gone, about 2 to 3 hours, before eating. Then soft food is fine: dal, khichdi, curd, idli, upma and soaked roti. Chew on the other side and avoid nuts, chikki, ice and hard or sticky food on the treated tooth until the permanent crown is fitted.
What happens if a root canal fails? (RCT fail ho jaye to kya karein?)
A failed root canal can usually still be saved. The first option is re-treatment: the old filling is removed, the canals are cleaned again and resealed. If that is not possible, a small surgical procedure called an apicoectomy treats the root tip directly. At Pain-Off Dental Care, re-treatment is done by our endodontist and root-end surgery by our oral surgeon.
