Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it causes almost no pain until it is advanced. That is what makes it dangerous. Bleeding when you brush is the early warning, and it is very easy to ignore for years.

Underneath, the bone that holds the teeth is slowly lost. Bone does not grow back on its own. Treatment can stop the damage and save the teeth, but it cannot rebuild what has already gone. So the most useful thing you can do is come in while the only sign is bleeding.

Treatment is led by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist. Depending on how advanced the disease is, this ranges from a deep clean under the gumline, to flap surgery to reach and clean the roots directly, to grafting to rebuild lost tissue.

Healthy gums also decide whether other dental work lasts. Dental implants placed in bone that is shrinking will loosen. Veneers bonded to teeth with swollen, bleeding gums look wrong within a year. This is why Dr Kavya checks the gums before agreeing to any cosmetic plan, and sometimes why she says no to one until the gums are treated first.

Gum treatment: what is involved

  1. 1

    Gum assessment

We measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth and X-ray the bone level. This gives a real diagnosis, not a guess.

  2. 2

    Deep cleaning

Scaling and root planing removes deposits from below the gumline, often under local anaesthetic so you stay comfortable.

  3. 3

    Surgery if needed

Where pockets are too deep to reach any other way, flap surgery folds the gum back so the roots can be cleaned directly.

  4. 4

    Maintenance

Gum disease is controlled, not cured. A maintenance visit every three months is what stops it coming back.

Signs of gum disease to check for

Gum disease is very common: the World Health Organization's 2022 Global Oral Health Status Report estimates that severe gum disease affects about one in five adults worldwide. It is usually painless until late, so these signs are worth acting on early.

  • Gums that bleed when you brush, floss or eat
  • Red, swollen or tender gums instead of firm, pale pink ones
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that does not go away
  • Gums pulling back, making teeth look longer
  • Teeth that feel loose, have moved, or bite together differently
  • Pus between the teeth and gums

Gum treatment in Jodhpur — common questions

Why do my gums bleed? (Masudo se khoon kyon aata hai?)

Gums usually bleed because plaque along the gumline has inflamed them, an early stage of gum disease called gingivitis. Brushing too hard, some medicines such as blood thinners, hormonal changes in pregnancy and, rarely, vitamin deficiencies or blood disorders can also cause it. Bleeding that lasts more than two weeks needs a dental check.

My gums bleed but do not hurt. Is that a problem?

Yes, bleeding gums without pain are still a sign of gum disease, because the bleeding means the gums are inflamed. As it is painless, people often ignore it until teeth loosen, and by then lost bone cannot be recovered. Caught at the bleeding stage, gum disease is usually reversed with a professional cleaning and better brushing.

How do I stop my gums bleeding? (Masudo se khoon kaise band karein?)

To stop gums bleeding, brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush, angled at the gumline, and clean between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes. Keep brushing even where it bleeds. Have a professional cleaning to remove tartar, which brushing cannot. If bleeding continues after two weeks, see a dentist.

What is pyorrhea? (Pyorrhea kya hai?)

Pyorrhea is the old name for periodontitis, advanced gum disease in which infection destroys the bone and fibres that hold the teeth. Signs include bleeding and receding gums, bad breath, pus and loose teeth. It is treated with deep cleaning below the gums and sometimes gum surgery, and it can be controlled but needs regular maintenance.

Can loose teeth be saved? (Dant hil raha hai to kya karein?)

Loose teeth from gum disease can often be saved if enough supporting bone remains. Treating the inflammation lets the gums firm up around the teeth again. If most of the bone is lost, it cannot be rebuilt and the tooth will eventually be lost. An X-ray and gum measurements at Pain-Off Dental Care show which applies.

Can receding gums grow back?

Receding gums do not grow back on their own. Treatment stops further recession by controlling gum disease and correcting hard brushing. Where roots are exposed, sensitive or look long, a gum graft can cover them again. At Pain-Off Dental Care, gum grafting is done by Dr Kavya Mathur, an MDS periodontist.

Is deep cleaning of teeth painful?

Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing below the gumline, is usually done under local anaesthetic, so it is not painful during treatment. The gums may be tender for a day or two, and teeth can be sensitive to cold for a few weeks as cleaned root surfaces settle. A sensitive-teeth toothpaste helps.

Is gum disease linked to diabetes?

Yes, diabetes and gum disease affect each other: diabetes makes gum disease more severe, and active gum disease makes blood sugar harder to control. People with diabetes should have their gums checked at least twice a year. Tell your dentist about diabetes, as it changes how often maintenance visits are needed.

Do smoking and gutkha cause gum disease?

Yes, smoking and chewing tobacco or gutkha are major causes of gum disease and tooth loss, and they also hide its main warning sign by reducing gum bleeding. Gutkha users often develop gum recession where the quid is held. Stopping tobacco improves the result of gum treatment considerably.

How much does gum treatment cost in Jodhpur?

The cost of gum treatment in Jodhpur depends on how advanced the disease is: a deep clean of one or two areas costs far less than flap surgery or grafting across the mouth. Pain-Off Dental Care in Sardarpura measures the gums and X-rays the bone first, then gives a written plan and cost before treatment.
