Some dental problems cannot wait for an appointment next week. Severe pain that painkillers no longer help, swelling of the face or gum, a tooth knocked out in an accident, a crown that has come off before an important day — these need to be seen now.

Message us on WhatsApp and tell us what has happened. If you can manage it at home until we see you, we will tell you how. If you need to come in today, we will find you a slot.

Facial swelling needs special attention. A dental infection that has started to swell the face or the floor of the mouth is truly urgent, especially with fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. It needs to be seen the same day. If you cannot reach us, go to a hospital. Do not wait it out overnight.

What happens after we settle the pain depends on what caused it. A cracked or badly decayed tooth that is still alive usually needs a root canal. A tooth that has broken beyond saving needs a tooth extraction, and we will talk about replacing it later, not on the same day. Sometimes it is just a lost filling, and half an hour fixes it.

Emergency dental care: what is involved

  1. 1

    Message us

Tell us what happened and send a photo if you can. A picture tells us more than a long message.

  2. 2

    Immediate advice

We will tell you what to do right now — including when the answer is to go to a hospital instead of coming to us.

  3. 3

    Urgent appointment

We see you and bring the pain or infection under control first.

  4. 4

    Final treatment

Once things have settled, we fix the underlying problem properly instead of just patching it.

Dant dard tonight: what to do until you see a dentist

Toothache that keeps you awake usually means the nerve inside the tooth is inflamed or infected. Home care can take the edge off for a night or two. It does not treat the cause, and the pain usually returns until the tooth is treated.

  • Take an ordinary over-the-counter painkiller exactly as directed on the pack, or as your pharmacist advises. Check with a doctor first if you are pregnant, have stomach, kidney or liver problems, or take other medicines.
  • Hold a cold pack wrapped in a cloth on the outside of the cheek, 15 minutes on, 15 off.
  • Sleep with your head raised on two pillows; lying flat makes throbbing worse.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water and floss around the tooth in case food is trapped.
  • Avoid very hot, very cold and sweet food and drink on that side.
  • Do not put aspirin, a tablet or raw clove directly on the gum. They burn the gum and do not reach the nerve.
  • Do not take leftover antibiotics. Antibiotics do not relieve toothache, and the wrong course causes harm. A dentist decides if you need one.

Go to a hospital, not the dental clinic, if…

A small number of dental problems become medical emergencies. If any of these apply, call 108 or 112, or go to the nearest hospital emergency department straight away, at any time of day.

  • Swelling spreading to the eye, under the jaw or down the neck
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing, or you cannot open your mouth
  • High fever with facial swelling, or you feel very unwell
  • A face or jaw injury from an accident, especially with a head injury
  • Bleeding from the mouth that will not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure

Emergency dental care in Jodhpur — common questions

What should I do immediately for a toothache? (Dant dard me turant kya karein?)

For toothache, take an ordinary over-the-counter painkiller as directed on the pack, hold a cold pack on the cheek, rinse with warm salt water and keep your head raised at night. These ease the pain for a day or two but do not treat the cause. See a dentist within 24 to 48 hours, sooner if there is swelling.

Which medicine is good for toothache? (Dant dard ki dawa kaun si hai?)

Ordinary over-the-counter painkillers, taken exactly as directed on the pack or by a pharmacist, help most toothache for a short time. Antibiotics do not relieve toothache and should only be taken when a dentist prescribes them. If you are pregnant, take other medicines or have a medical condition, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking any painkiller.

Why is toothache worse at night?

Toothache feels worse at night because lying flat increases blood flow to the head, raising pressure around an inflamed nerve, and because there is nothing to distract you. Sleeping with your head raised on two pillows helps. Toothache that wakes you up usually means the nerve is badly inflamed and the tooth needs treatment soon.

My face is swollen from a tooth. Is that serious?

Facial swelling from a tooth means the infection has spread beyond the tooth and should be seen the same day. If the swelling is spreading towards the eye or neck, or you have fever or difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth, go to a hospital emergency department straight away rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

My tooth has been knocked out. What do I do right now?

Pick a knocked-out adult tooth up by the crown, never the root. If dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or saline, not water, and do not scrub it. Push it gently back into the socket and bite on a cloth, or keep it in milk and see a dentist immediately. The International Association of Dental Traumatology advises replanting within the first hour.

What should I do if my tooth breaks? (Dant toot jaye to kya karein?)

If a tooth breaks, keep any broken piece in milk, rinse your mouth with warm water and press gauze on any bleeding. See a dentist within a day or two, or the same day if it is painful or the break shows pink or red inside. Small chips are repaired with bonding; bigger breaks need a crown or root canal.

Does clove oil help toothache?

Clove oil can numb the area briefly because it contains eugenol, a mild anaesthetic that dentists also use. Put one drop on a cotton bud and hold it against the tooth, not the gum, and never use raw clove or undiluted oil on the gum, which can burn it. It is a short-term measure only.

What can I take for toothache in pregnancy?

For toothache in pregnancy, ask your doctor or pharmacist which painkiller is safe for you before taking anything, and do not take medicines left over from before. See a dentist promptly: dental treatment, including local anaesthetic and shielded X-rays, is safe in pregnancy, and treating an infection is safer than leaving it.

What should I do if my child has toothache?

If a child has toothache, rinse their mouth with warm water, check for trapped food, and give a children's painkiller only at the dose for their weight on the pack or as a doctor advises. Do not put anything on the gum. Book a dentist within a day or two, and the same day if the face is swollen or they have a fever.

Do you charge more for an emergency appointment?

No, at Pain-Off Dental Care in Jodhpur, an emergency visit is for finding the problem and getting you out of pain, and any treatment is charged at the normal rate. You are told the cost before treatment starts. Message the clinic on WhatsApp first so a slot can be found the same day where possible.
