The main goal of a child's first few dental visits is not really the teeth. It is making sure they are not scared of the place. A child frightened at six avoids dentists at twenty-six, and then arrives with problems that did not need to happen.

We keep first visits short and relaxed. Often the first appointment is just a ride in the chair, a count of the teeth and a sticker.

Milk teeth matter more than parents expect. They hold the space for the adult teeth. If a milk tooth is lost early to decay, the teeth next to it drift into the gap — and that is how a child ends up needing braces they would not otherwise have needed.

Kids' dentistry: what is involved

  1. 1

    Getting comfortable

We let the child sit in the chair, look at the instruments and ask questions first.

  2. 2

    Examination

A count of the teeth, a check for decay, and a look at how the adult teeth are coming through.

  3. 3

    Prevention

Fluoride on the teeth, and sealants on the back teeth. Sealants cover the grooves where decay starts.

  4. 4

    Treatment if needed

Fillings or extractions, done in a few short appointments rather than one long one.

Your child's teeth, age by age

Children have 20 milk teeth. Knowing roughly when they come and go helps parents tell what is normal from what needs a dentist. Every child is a little different, so a few months either way is usual.

  • Around 6 months: first milk teeth, usually the lower front ones. Start cleaning them with a soft brush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice.
  • By the first birthday: first dental visit, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
  • By about 3 years: all 20 milk teeth in. From 3, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, and supervise brushing until about 7 or 8.
  • Around 6 years: the first adult molars come in behind the milk teeth, without any milk tooth falling out. These are often mistaken for milk teeth and need sealants and care.
  • 6 to 12 years: milk teeth loosen and fall out as adult teeth come in.
  • Around 7 to 10 years: an orthodontic check, to catch jaw and bite problems while the jaw is still growing.

Kids' dentistry in Jodhpur — common questions

When do babies get their first teeth? (Bacho ke dant kab aate hain?)

Babies usually get their first tooth at around 6 months, most often a lower front tooth, and have all 20 milk teeth by about 3 years. Some babies start as early as 3 months or as late as 12 months, which is usually normal. If no tooth has appeared by about 15 to 18 months, see a dentist.

When should my child first see a dentist?

A child should first see a dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth, as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends. The first visit is short and gentle: a look at the teeth, advice on brushing, feeding and fluoride, and getting the child comfortable with the clinic.

My child's milk tooth is decayed. Does it matter if it will fall out anyway?

Yes, a decayed milk tooth can become infected and painful, and the infection can affect the adult tooth forming underneath. If a milk tooth is lost early, the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap and crowd the adult tooth meant to come in there. Decayed milk teeth should be treated.

What should I do if my child has toothache? (Bache ke dant me dard ho to kya karein?)

If a child has toothache, rinse their mouth with warm water, check for food stuck between the teeth, and give a children's painkiller only at the dose for their weight on the pack or as a doctor advises. Do not put anything on the gum. See a dentist within a day or two, or the same day if the face swells.

How much toothpaste should a child use?

Children under 3 should use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice, and children aged 3 to 6 a pea-sized amount, following American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidance. Parents should brush for young children and supervise until about 7 or 8, and teach them to spit, not rinse.

How do I prevent cavities in my child's teeth?

To prevent cavities in children, brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, limit sweets, biscuits and sweet drinks to mealtimes, and never put a child to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice. Sealants on the back adult molars, placed around age 6 to 7, protect the deep grooves where most childhood decay starts.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin protective coating painted into the deep grooves of the back teeth, where food and bacteria collect and brushing struggles to reach. They are quick and painless, need no injection or drilling, and are usually placed on the first adult molars at around 6 to 7 years.

Is thumb sucking bad for my child's teeth?

Thumb sucking is normal in babies and young children and usually stops by itself by age 3 to 4. If it continues after the adult front teeth start coming in, around age 6, it can push the teeth forward and affect the bite. A dentist can suggest gentle ways to help a child stop.

At what age should braces be considered?

A child's teeth and jaw should be checked by an orthodontist around age 7 to 10, while the jaw is still growing. Braces themselves usually start later, between 11 and 14. Spotting a jaw or bite problem early sometimes means simpler treatment later, and Pain-Off Dental Care's orthodontist can do this check.

Can I stay with my child during treatment?

Yes, parents can always stay with their child during treatment at Pain-Off Dental Care, and it often helps younger children feel safe. Some older children do better on their own. The dentist works at the child's pace, explaining each step first, so the child does not grow up afraid of dentists.
